"Paint Peeling Problems Finally Solved"

The Problem:

As you know, peeling paint after all your hard work is very annoying and disappointing. All that hard work ruined.

Despite the best efforts of paint manufacturers all over the World, not one of them has come up with a reliable answer to the age old problem of peeling paint.

They all say… “Make sure the surface is well prepared” etc and no matter how much work you put into a paint job, quite often that paint is going to peel right off again and all you will hear if you complain is… “You did not prepare the surface properly… that is why it peeled off!” and the paint company / paint store wash their hands of all responsibility leaving you with the problem unresolved.

Why does the problem of peeling paint happen in the first place?

Apart from obvious dirty, greasy, wet / damp surfaces which as you know, virtually nothing will stick to, in the majority of cases paint peels off from non greasy, clean, dry surfaces because the paint cannot get a proper grip on the substrate itself.

The majority of peeling paint problems occur on surfaces exposed to the rain, sun, temperature gain / drops, movement, abrasion etc but paint peels or chips off on indoor surfaces also.

Here is a selection of the most common paint peeling or problem surfaces irrespective of whether Oil or Water based Paints are used..

Masonry, plasterwork, brickwork, rendered surfaces, new concrete, patios, stone, wood, garden ornaments, previously painted surfaces, galvanised steel, shiny / smooth surfaces like pvc, fibreglass, aluminium, glass, melamine / Formica,

Peeling paint occurs with both Water based paints and Oil based paints.

We Offer You 2 Unique Solutions

Peeling Solution… Owatrol Oil

Owatrol Oil is the Number 1 (paint adhesion) ‘secret solution’ for all discerning painter decorators who want to avoid call backs and who pride themselves on first class work.

They use Owatrol Oil in conjunction with oil based paints or varnish on all surfaces where they encounter actual or potential paint peeling / flaking problems because they know from experience that this unique method makes the paint / varnish stick tight like superglue and they will not be called back to fix problems later, thereby guaranteeing a first class job, happier customers and of course a more profitable job for him/herself because they do not waste precious time going back fixing problems.

Here is How Owatrol Oil Works:

Owatrol Oil is a proprietary blend of drying oils that are extremely thin in nature, about 3 times ‘wetter’ than water. That means, when Owatrol is applied to any porous surface it will penetrate into that surface far deeper than even water can. On the other hand, when it is applied to a non-porous surface it has amazing adhesion properties.

So… The average oil based paint / varnish is designed to get an ‘average grip’ to straightforward surfaces, but when they come into contact with challenging situations… they usually blister / peel or flake off after a period.

When you add Owatrol Oil into the paint / varnish (do not use white spirit in the same mix) it drastically increases that paint’s penetration / grip properties. Usually the first coat whether it be an undercoat, primer or even a finish paint is ‘thinned’ with Owatrol to a ‘runny consistency’ (the runnier that first coat is – the stronger the penetration / bond will be)

This secret formula (jealously guarded by professional painter decorators) guarantees paint / varnish adhesion to even the most difficult surfaces.

Here are some examples of situations where Owatrol Oil works wonders when used in conjunction with any make / colour oil based paint or varnish…

  • Window Sills, Wall Cappings, Plinths, Concrete Steps, Concrete Floors etc
  • Fascia boards, doors and other woodwork (facing prevailing rain, winds, sun)
  • Garden ornaments, gnomes, fountain, terracotta pots, fencing etc
  • Galvanised steel gates etc, (if less than 1 year exposed, wash first with cellulose thinners)
  • Plastic coated steel cladding, powder coated surfaces, kitchen cabinet makeovers.
  • as a 'concrete stain' great for driveways, patio slabs etc
  • Paint or varnish on front doors etc. Eliminates brush marks / roller marks.

Owatrol oil is compatible with and works in conjunction with any Oil based paint or varnish. (i.e. Alkyd or white spirit cleanup)

Coverage Guide:

Owatrol Oil coverage for paint adhesion depends on the thickness of the paint / varnish itself.
As mentioned above in How Owatrol Oil Works... the 'thinner / runnier you make the first coat, the more it will penetrate or soak into the substrate - pulling the paint in with it. In the case of a non-porous surface like a glossy finish etc, the more Owatrol Oil you mix into your first coat - the stronger the grip will be on that surface. A good mix will make your paint stick like a powerful glue.
As a good guide, consider about 1 litre of Owatrol Oil to 3 litres of paint.
You may 'dilute' your oil based paint with any ratio of Owatrol Oil, even to a point where the majority of the mix is Owatrol Oil for staining etc. Owatrol Oil does not affect the colour although a very strong dilution will lessen hiding power of the paint.
Note: Golden rule is... for a powerful grip - make first coat 'runny'.
Note: For a superb finish, no brush marks etc - add Owatrol Oil at about 15% ratio.
Owatrol Oil covers a vast range of home / property possibilities - not just peeling paint.

Another Fantastic Use for Owatrol Oil:

There are dozens of unique applications where you can experience amazing results using Owatrol Oil. Here is one example…

You can make up some amazing stains using Owatrol Oil and any colour / brand of oil based paint or varnish...here's how:

Let’s say you would like to stain a concrete driveway or patio slabs black.

First the obvious… make sure concrete is clean and dry and no previous coatings / finishes present.

Add Owatrol oil into either the black (can be gloss, mat or whatever) at a ratio where it is extremely runny. Dilution will depend on paint's viscosity but can be anywhere from 33% to 90% or so. You will know a good dilution when the mixture of paint and Owatrol literally soaks into the concrete pulling the colour in with it.

The idea here is.. the Owatrol will pull the colour deep down into the pores of the concrete giving an amazing appearance that will not peel off and will last for years. This idea will work on any porous substrate.
Examples: wood, concrete, terracotta, render, plasterwork, roof tiles, leather etc. This stain idea is superb as a way to paint a concrete floor any colour oil based paint for a hardwearing finish. You can do a similar trick with Owatrol Oil mixed with a clear varnish where you prefer a neutral look or even a combination of colour to be followed by a varnish for 'depth'. Another very useful application for this colour stain is a concrete garden fountain or garden concrete fish tank. (concrete must be spotless, stain needs two weeks to dry and cure fully prior to adding water.)

Tip:You can do a similar idea on cast iron (example Fireplace) especially where recently sand blasted or stripped. In this instance, use Owatol Oil as the main coating and colour it by adding some oil based paint of your choice.

Peeling Solution… E-B

E-B is the other secret weapon pro painter decorators use when they want any water based paint stick tight. It is suitable for any emulsion or exterior masonry paint.

Here is How E-B Works.

But first the basics…Make sure the surface to be painted is clean and dry.

Remove any loose flaky or peeling paint with whatever is appropriate. Small areas might be prepped with a scraper of wire brush and large areas might be power washed. If power washing we suggest you apply water jet at a sharp angle to minimise water penetration into the wall etc and it also acts like a scraping action. The less water you put into the wall – the quicker it dries out. A chalky surface will need minimal preparation when using E-B. Note: No Stabiliser needed. This saves an enormous amount of time and work.

E-B’s tight gripping formula is based on its sister product Owatrol Oil above, but is modified to work with any water based paints. All you do is add / stir E-B into the first coat of paint being applied (does not have to be the first coat on the substrate) at a ratio of minimum 1 part E-B to 3 parts paint. [i.e 1 litre of E-B to 3 Litres of paint]

You may strengthen the mix up as far as 1 part E-B to 1 part paint if you wish for extreme problem areas.

Here’s what happens
when you mix the E-B into the paint. After application, the E-B part of the ‘mixture’ penetrates into the substrate leaving the paint ‘looking out’ but both remain firmly stuck - 'back to back'. As with Owatrol Oil above, thousands of painters decorators whose reputation is on the line, use E-B to make any water based paint stick to what would be described as a tricky surface or a surface with a history of peeling paint.

E-B Small       (1L) €24.50 Add to Cart
E-B Medium (2.5L) €49.97 Add to Cart
E-B Large     (10L) €193.87 Add to Cart

Coverage Guide:

The surface you are painting will determine the mix ratio. As a general guide, stir in a minimum of 1 litre of E-B to 3 litres of water based (latex) paint. For surfaces with a long history of peeling paint or blistering etc, I suggest you increase the ratio of E-B added, as far up to 1 to 1. Some people use E-B alone / neat but there is no need to do that. You save time and work by adding it into your first coat of paint. (If you are a pro painter decorator, this method will take away time and effort wasted applying a separate stabiliser coat.. which equates to 33% labour saving)

More Good Ideas for E-B
Here are some further examples of situations where E-B works wonders when used in conjunction with any make / colour water based paint…Interior or Exterior (with appropriate paint) No more boring choices

  • Wood. Paint wooden fence, shed etc with any colour masonry paint – no peel.
  • Dry Wall / Plaster. Big time saver used with first coat over drywall – no peel
  • Concrete. Example patio slabs, window sills, garden walls etc – no peel.
  • Roof Tiles. Paint any colour with masonry paint – no peel
  • MDF. Use any emulsion or masonry to get fast seal and adhesion to MDF.
  • Terracotta ornaments, pots etc
  • Bathroom ceiling paint etc – superb answer to this problem.
